H2 Translation (Chinese)
Translation (Chinese) is a Chinese medium subject designed to develop students’ interest and proficiency in practical translation as well as critical appreciation of translations. The subject is offered at H2 level.
The subject is designed to encourage students’ interest in the Chinese language through analysis of practical issues associated with communications across languages and cultures. Students will get to understand in-depth the linguistics aspects of both the Chinese and English language, as well as perform translations of texts from Chinese to English, and vice versa. Students are also required to ascertain translation errors in texts while at the same time, rationalise their translation choices, and demonstrate a critical appreciation of translations. They will also acquire an understanding of the contexts in which translation operates in Singapore and study the relevant issues.
